Gail, your host at Nelson Bay Getaway, takes a 4WD drive tour with along Stockton Sand Dunes on the NSW North Coast.
The dunes along Stockton Bight are wind swept and devoid of vegetation and create a sand mass that is in constant movement. The dunes are currently moving inland at a rate of 10m/year.
The Stockton Dunes area contains many Aboriginal sites that are extremely important to the local Aboriginal community. The Stockton Dunes are also home to many threatened bird species, including the the Oystercatcher.
This beach and dune tour was organised through Horizon Safaris, a local Port Stephens tour operator. Similar Stockton Beach dune tours can also be arranged with the Bushmobile another Nelson Bay tourism operator.

Here's Gail with Giovanna from Italy. This is Stockton Bight on the New South Wales Coast of Australia, with 26km of sand-dunes it's the largest sand mass of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the sand dunes exceed 30 metres in height.

Brave girl on a sand board! Get ready for an exhilarating ride.
The steering mechanism is attached to one's shoulder. It's all very high tech.

Great speed! Creating a flurry of sand ensures that you don't go out of control.
It was a very steep dune. You'll have to take the tour to see if you get picked up at the bottom of the sand dune or not!

Gail and her sand dune tour companions had a really long day and travelled well into the twilight.
Graham, on the left (with hat) impressed his guests by digging for fresh water, only about half a metre down. They drank his health! |
