You are almost guaranteed to see Bottlenose Dolphins because this is their home! The dolphins at Port Stephens number around 160, with approximately 70 mainly female dolphins regularly within the Port, and the remainder moving to and from the ocean. Despite their sleek looks, adult dolphins weigh around 200kg. The average bottlenose dolphin lives for 32 years for males and 42 years for females. Dolphins love to ride the bow waves of a boat. They seem to play 'now you see me - now you don't' but given that they can dive to depths of 300m and hold their breath for about 7 minutes no wonder it is often an on-off show! Most boats lower a boom net which you can sit in, about 30cm into the water. With any luck, the dolphins will come to play near you.
